If you are planning to hit the road this summer, it is a good idea to have your vehicle serviced before you get going. The extreme weather that comes with Canadian summers (and winters!) can wreak havoc on your vehicle if it is not properly maintained. Here at Stratford Hyundai in Stratford, Ontario, we want you to get the most out of your summer road trips, so we have put together a checklist to help you keep your car running in its best shape this summer.
Oil, Fluid, and Filters
The change in temperature affects the viscosity of the oil in your engine, making it less efficient at lubricating your engine. Additionally, if you haven’t changed your oil in some time, it is likely contaminated by the dirt and debris that has accumulated after months of driving, which can cause damage to the engine and related components. Your vehicle's engine oil and filter should be changed regularly, but it is a good idea to check it (and replace it if necessary) before a road trip.
We also recommend inspecting the other crucial fluids in your vehicle, such as the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and fuel and air filters.
Tires
Temperature changes also directly affect the air pressure in your tires. Generally speaking, you gain or lose one pound per square inch (psi) of pressure for every ten degrees of change in temperature. Driving with improperly inflated tires is not only dangerous, but it also reduces the lifespan of your tires by causing premature wear and tear. We also recommend visually inspecting the tread of your tires for signs of wear, which can be a sign that your tires need to be rotated. Unusual wear patterns could mean that your vehicle needs an alignment.
Air Conditioning
Finally, it is a good idea to make sure your AC is working correctly. If you notice it is not cooling down like it used to, it might need to be recharged. Before recharging it, it is a good idea to have the system checked for leaks.
