The fresh smell of fall is behind us, as all the trees have lost their leaves. The shorter days have brought with them reduced sunlight, colder temperatures and snow. As the temperature drops and winter makes its grand entrance, it is more important than ever to be mindful of the driving conditions. However, before you set out on your morning run, you have to deal with the frigid temperatures and, worst of all, an icy windshield and side windows. There is no one that can with a straight face say they enjoy scraping the ice off the vehicle's glass. At Stratford Hyundai, we all understand your pain; that's why we want to provide some tools and tricks for residents of London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Woodstock, and surrounding areas of Ontario so you can remove the ice and snow quickly.

Aside from frosty windshields, another great way to get winter ready is to focus on regular vehicle maintenance. At Stratford Hyundai, we have state of the art service centre that is ready to help you any way they can. Book a service appointment online and skip the line. Now let's get back to our main topic.

If you wake up to an icy windshield, the usual solution is to let your vehicle run for some time and then come out and scrape off what is remaining. Not only is this time consuming, but letting your vehicle idle also burns through more fuel. What is the better and faster way to de-ice your windshield?

Below, you will find a list of ways to de-ice your windshield.

Apply de-icer spray

You can acquire windshield de-icer at various automotive and hardware stores. Or, if you are handy, you can make it at home with some simple household ingredients. There are two types of de-icer sprays that you can make yourself:

Isopropyl alcohol and water

  • Mix two parts 70% isopropyl alcohol and one part water and pour it into a spray bottle.

Saltwater de-icer solution

  • Mix a few teaspoons of table salt into a spray bottle full of water.

Scrape your windshield gently

  • After sparing your windshield, make sure to scrape it gently

How to prevent an icy windshield

There are a couple of solutions if you want to avoid dealing with an icy windshield.

  • Cover your car, windshield, or park it in a garage.
  • Fill your vehicle with a washer fluid that is designed for colder temperatures.
